Special Bulletin - Science Faith Weekend at The Center for Earth & Space Science Education

Special Bulletin
Fall 2013

Hello Friends,

As part of the 50th Anniversary celebration of The Center for Earth & Space Science Education at Tyler Junior College, we want to invite everyone to be part of Science/Faith Weekend. Two public events will be held this weekend.

"America's Creation-Evolution Controversy" by Dr. Karl Giberson

When: Saturday, Nov 23 at 7:00PM
Where: Apache Rooms, Rogers Student Center, TJC Main Campus
Cost: Non-members - $5/seat; Members - free

Dr. Karl Giberson was raised in a fundamentalist parsonage to believe the universe was 10,000 years old, evolution was a conspiracy with no scientific foundation, and Darwin was evil. Studying physics in a Christian college convinced him that science was compatible with belief in God. In his talks Giberson shares his struggle to make peace with Darwin and the serious challenges it poses to traditional religious belief. Interwoven with his personal journey is the story of a deeply religious America wrestling with a science that is often used as a club to bash religion.

Giberson received his Ph.D. in Physics from Rice University. He has published more than 200 reviews and essays, both technical and popular, in outlets that include NY Times, CNN.com, Huffington Post, the Guardian, USA Today, LA Times, Salon.com, Discover, Weekly Standard, Quarterly Review of Biology, Perspectives on Science & Faith, The Edge.org, and Books & Culture. He has written or co-authored 9 books (including Saving Darwin: How to be a Christian and Believe in Evolution), and contributed to many edited volumes.

Science & Faith Panel Discussion: "Is There a War Between Science & Faith?"

When: Sunday, Nov 24 at 6:30PM
Where: Apache Rooms, Rogers Student Center, TJC Main Campus
Cost: Non-members - $5/seat; Members - free

Panelists: Rabbi Neal Katz, Fr. Tim Kelly, Anwar Khalifa, Dr. Karl Giberson
  • Rabbi Neal Katz is rabbi at Congregation Beth El in Tyler, Texas.
  • Fr. Tim Kelly is the Pastor of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Flint, Texas.
  • Anwar Khalifa is a member of the East Texas Islamic Society.
  • Dr. Karl Giberson is a Christian and professor at Eastern Nazarene College.

Special Bulletin - Kid's Day and Pat Rawlings Coming to CESSE!

Special Bulletin
Fall 2013

Hello Friends,

I want to tell everyone about two great events starting this week at The Center for Earth & Space Science Education at Tyler Junior College.

Pat Rawlings & The Artist's Universe

Thursday, Nov 7th, at 7:00PM Space Illustrator and Designer Pat Rawlings will be here to help open the new Artist's Universe Mars Space Art exhibit.

This is a special, free event open to our members only. However, if you are not a member you can easily become one. The cost is only $35 for a basic membership and $30 for each additional family member. Membership allows you a full year of free unlimited daily admission to the museum, planetarium shows, and special members-only events like this one. For information about membership visit www.tjc.edu/cesse/membership.
For more than 30 years, Pat Rawlings has illustrated - or, you could say, "storyboarded" - the future of space exploration. His realistic views of both human and robotic space exploration provide a chronology of the plans, hopes and aspirations of some of the planet's best visionaries.

"The Artists' Universe: Mars," features 34 paintings by space artists, including Rawlings, who are members of the International Association of Astronomical Artists. He is an IAAA charter fellow and trustee. Two of Rawlings' works, "Red Storm" and "The Pit," will be featured.

"The Artists' Universe: Mars" exhibit runs Tuesday, Nov. 5, through Sunday, Jan. 5.

Kid's Day

Looking for a great outing with the kids this Saturday? Come help us kick off our 50th year as a science education center at Tyler Junior College by joining us Saturday, November 9, for
Kid's Day!
On November 9th, kids 12 and under will be admitted to CESSE for free all day (10:30am-6:00pm). To celebrate the future scientists who will lead us into tomorrow, we'll be showing kid-approved shows all day in the dome, and celebrating our planetarium's 50th birthday with birthday cake and other fun things in the classroom. After you've enjoyed your cake, be sure to check out our Origins: Dawn of the Dinosaurs exhibit in the exhibit hall, and the new coral reef tank, full of new marine friends you may not have met before!
In honor of our young explorers and discoverers, the schedule of shows on Saturday will be as follows:
  • 11:00 - Secret of the Cardboard Rocket
  • 12:00 - Astronaut
  • 1:00 - Little Star That Could
  • 2:00 - Dinosaur Passage to Pangea
  • 3:00 - Space Park 360
  • 4:00 - Astronaut
  • 5:00 - Earth, Moon, & Sun
  • 6:00 - Space Park 360
For more information, give us a call at 903-510-2312, email us at cesse@tjc.edu, visit us at http://www.tjc.edu/cesse/, or stop by and see us!
