Special Bulletin - 50th Anniversary Members-Only Event

Special Bulletin
Fall 2013

Hello Friends,

Fifty Years! Yes, it has been fifty years since Tyler Junior College first established a world-class planetarium on its main campus. Since then, you have helped us inspire millions of East Texans with amazing dome content and science outreach activities. We are truly blessed to be a part of such a strong and supportive community. To show our thanks, and to help celebrate our 50th Anniversary, we would like to invite our members to a special VIP (members-only) event. But first let me tell you a story.

I grew up in the small town of Greenville, Texas. As a young man, some of the things that held my attention (besides girls) were comics, the night sky, and science fiction. Many were the times that I started reading a new comic or science fiction paperback only to become distracted by the artwork. Images of distant worlds, astronauts at work, or spaceships filled my imagination and were probably the inspirations that led me into my current career. In retrospect, the works of space artists probably attracted me to science long before I developed the ability to grasp difficult and abstract concepts.

One such inspiring space artist is Mr. Pat Rawlings. His art has been on the cover of "Aviation Week and Space Technology" nine times. He has produced artwork for NASA, The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, Lockheed, Ballantine Books, Tor Books, Analog, Time-Life Books, Scientific American Magazine, Encyclopaedia Brittanica, Air and Space/Smithsonian Magazine, Walt Disney Television Productions, IMAX Space Films and NHK Publishing/Japan among others. Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan featured a dozen of Rawlings' paintings. His design of all the spacecraft and the colony in the 3D IMAX film, "L5: First City in Space" and other film projects garnered worldwide acclaim.

Mr. Pat Rawlings is one of the world's foremost space illustrators and designers, and I am pleased to announce that he will be our guest this November. All members of The Center for Earth & Space Science Education are invited to join us for a special evening event featuring this world-renowned artist.

What makes this doubly exciting for me is that Pat Rawlings also grew up in Greenville, Texas. Please come meet Mr. Rawlings. Hope to see you there.

If you would like to attend and are not a member, please consider becoming a member of the Center for Earth & Space Science Education. To fill out a membership form, stop by the ticket counter during our regular business hours.
